JBL PROFESSIONAL SCREENARRAY® - THE LOUDSPEAKER OF DIGITAL CINEMA

LAS VEGAS, NV - MARCH 5, 2002 - While the debate about Digital Cinema for today's theatres goes on, it is widely accepted that digital offers an increased visual and audio experience. Digital cinema soundtracks produce wider frequency range and wider dynamic range than analog systems, which can tax the ability of many existing speaker systems. ScreenArray® Series Cinema speakers from JBL Professional are designed to meet the increased audio demands of digital cinema, and have proven their acceptance within both the movie production and cinema exhibition communities.

"Industry experts predict that hundreds of screens will be built or converted to digital over the next twelve months. Adding ScreenArray speakers to these rooms will help provide the best possible cinema experience to the movie patrons," explained Chuck Goodsell, Director, Cinema Products for JBL Professional. "And beyond that, any theater that currently has our two-way or three-way ScreenArray systems is ready for digital sound. We are proud to say that ScreenArray is the loudspeaker of digital cinema." According to the Motion Picture Association of America website, "The members of the MPAA believe that the introduction of digital cinema represents the greatest opportunity for enhancing the theatrical film experience since the introduction of sound and advent of color. ...An all digital system has the potential of providing real benefits to theater audiences, theater owners, filmmakers and feature film distributors."

What makes ScreenArray the loudspeaker of digital cinema? Bernard Werner, Senior Systems Engineer for JBL Professional, a member of the team of engineers who developed ScreenArray explains, "ScreenArray systems are capable of handling the wide dynamic range associated with modern digital soundtracks such as SDDS, DTS, and Dolby Digital. They can handle the peak dynamic requirements as well as the continuous long-term power requirements. Some of the older cinema designs are not able to handle the peak power requirements that digital soundtracks can reproduce. ScreenArray also has pattern control innovations including SSC™ - Screen Spreading Compensation and Focused Coverage Technology™ for more uniform coverage of the audience area." In March 2002, Werner and co-designer Bill Gelow received a Technical Achievement Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for their work in line array and filter networks that led to JBL ScreenArray products. ScreenArray speaker systems are available in several two and three-way systems. The 3632 and 4632 ScreenArray three-way systems are THX-approved, offering superior coverage, maximum power handling, and extremely low distortion in systems that are just 450 mm (17 3/4 inches) deep. The smaller two-way systems, 3622N and 4622/4622N, provide smooth and accurate reproduction of soundtracks in a compact, cost-effective format. All ScreenArray systems are shipped fully assembled.
